- Commerces & Services (11)
A thorn bush wilderness dotted with vast sheep and cattle farms surrounds Zeerust and the town is often thronged with ranchers.
Its long main street, lined with stores and pubs, looks all set for a posse of wild west cowboys to ride into town for a shoot-out.
Lead and chrome is mined in the area, which also produces corn, tobacco and citrus fruit and these industries form the backbone of the economy in this bushveld town.
There is a museum with relics of the towns early days.
Zeerust originated in 1864 when Casper Coetzee employed an itinerant builder, Walter Seymore, to build a church and fort on his farm. Coetzee died before the buildings were completed and the town which grew around the parish was named Coetzee's rest, or Zeerust, in his memory.
